Description
The Cañón del Río Lobos Natural Park is a protected natural area straddling the provinces of Soria and Burgos. The juniper, oak, and pine forest is home to significant biodiversity (vultures, falcons, eagles) and framed by eroded limestone cliffs with natural caves. The most visited feature is the 13th century Templar hermitage of San Bartolomé, a ~2km walk from the Galiana entrance. There are hiking paths (dirt track) and viewpoints scattered across the park.
Access & Transport
The natural park is 80km southeast of Burgos, just off the main road (N-234) connecting the city with Soria (55km). There are 3 main access points: from Hontoria del Pinar (the upstream most), the "Bridge of the Seven Eyes " that connects San Leonardo de Yagüe with Santa María de las Hoyas, and from the SO-920 at the end of the canyon to Galiana and the interpretation centre.
Instructions & Recommendations
The Burgo de Osma Cathedral is 18km south from the Galiana along the SO-920.
Environmental & Social
Green attraction. Tourism brings some revenues to the surrounding villages
Conclusion
The Cañón del Río Lobos Natural Park makes for a good stop on a regional itinerary or a half-day outing for Soria or Burgos residents but isn't special enough to warrant a long detour, in our opinion. Good place to stretch your legs in between monastery visits.
Key positive
