Laguna Negra - Picos Urbión hike

SO-830, Vinuesa, Castilla y León

Description

Laguna Negra (Black Lagoon) is a glacial lake situated in the Sierra de los Picos de Urbión, in the Soria Province. The 8-9km route is essentially an out-and-back with a small loop opportunity midway through and racks up a cumulative ascent of 540m. It is not very technical and therefore suitable for inexperienced hikers but a base fitness level is required. Route direction: at the lagoon, take left and continue along the Collado de Majada Rubia. There will be 2 route options, you can take the one on the right to the top of Pico Urbión (2,228m) and head back down the other way.

Access & Transport

The trail starts at the car park at the end of Carretera Cima SO04, about 9km by road from the SO-830 branch-off.

Instructions & Recommendations

Make sure to bring proper footwear, some snacks, plenty of water, sun protection and rain/wind coat depending on the weather forecast. Cloudy doesn't mean the UVs won't get to you and the weather changes quickly in the high mountains.

Meta review

The summit of Pico de Urbión offers some of the best views in the region and the hike from Laguna Negra is considered by online reviewers to be the easiest way to the top. They describe the route as well marked and easy enough although proper footwear is highly recommended.

Environmental & Social

Eco-friendly activity. Marginally positive for the community as it brings some revenues to the villages in the area

The hike to Pico de Urbión offers good panoramic views and is arguably one of the best outdoor options in the Province of Soria. It might be a little short for advanced hikers who can consider a longer approach route
