Description
The Green Tomb is the mausoleum of Ottoman Sultan Mehmed I (died in 1421) and his immediate family. It was designed by architect Hacı Ivaz Pasha together with the Yeşil Mosque across it (Yeşil means "green"). The name is due to the turquoise, blue and green coloured Iznik tiles used to decorate the monument. The mausoleum is hexagonal and crowned with a 25m high dome. Besides the ornamental tiles, it is notable for the muqarnas niches of the entry portal and the richly decorated central catafalque and coffin.
Access & Transport
Address: Yeşil, 1. Yeşil Cd. 66-1, 16360 Yıldırım/Bursa The mausoleum is located in the kulliye Yesil complex next to the Green Mosque. The Meydancık on T3 tram line is 400m away. Bursa has a large domestic airport and is a 2h30 / 150km drive from Istanbul.
Instructions & Recommendations
Visitors should be dressed conservatively before entering. We suggest combining this activity with a visit of the Grand Mosque, a 10-15mins walk away.
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral and helps preserve the city's architectural heritage.
Conclusion
The Green Tomb and neighbouring Green Mosque of Bursa are must-see attractions for anyone in the city but, in our opinion, do not warrant a dedicated trip from outside the province. Visitors will enjoy the refined tilework and get the opportunity to learn about Mehmed I, the fifth Ottoman Sultan and son of Bayezid I.
Key positive
Beautiful ornamentation
Centrally located in Bursa and no entrance fee
Key negative
Non-Turkish visitors might miss the historical aspect
