Nordic Museum (Stockholm)

6 Djurgårdsvägen, Östermalm, Stockholms län

Description

The Nordic Museum (Nordiska museet) in Stockholm displays exhibits relating to Swedish cultural history and ethnography, from the 16th century up to the modern era. The collections contain thousands of decorative objects, clothes and toys from the Nordic countries as well as documents and photographs (since the 1840s). It is housed in a building constructed at the turn of the 20th century; its centrepiece is the immense main hall (126m long).

Access & Transport

The museum is in the northwest of Djurgården, an island with many of Stockholm key attractions located about 2km east of the city centre but easily accessible by public transport. The bus (67, 69, 76) and tram (7) stop 'Nordiska museet/Vasamuseet' is right in front of the building and the ferry is also an option (#82 from Slussen / #80 from Nybroplan to Allmänna gränd). For those driving, note that there are very limited parking spaces on the island so it is best to park before crossing the bridge (Djurgårdsbron), the museum is located right after it.

Instructions & Recommendations

Please note that you need to purchase a ticket in advance to visit the temporary exhibition ("Paris of the North" at the time of this review). The ticket is valid during a 90 minutes drop-in slot and and during the day (10 am-5 pm) at the rest of the museum. Nearby attractions include the Vasa Museum, the Skansen open-air museum, and the Gröna Lund amusement park.

Meta review

Average online reviews from visitors who enjoy the good looking building but the museum content itself seems to fall in the "interesting but not exceptional" bucket for most people. Recurring comments that there isn't that much to see and that the audioguide is subpar.

Environmental & Social

Cultural aspects. No info about the museum's operations available online so we deem the activity marginally negative in that respect (electricity usage mostly)

Conclusion

The gorgeous building belies an impressive main hall but the exhibits itself are unlikely to sustain anyone's interest for very long, unless you are really into history seen through the prism of clothes and everyday objects of the time.

Key positive

Attractive building and interior spaces

Near several other attractions

Key negative

Some visually arresting displays but cultural depth is quite limited

Not cheap considering the content

Suitability

Accessible for visitors with reduced mobility. Suitable for all ages but younger children are unlikely to be very interested
