Storkyrkan - by Heikki Immonen on Google

Description
Storkyrkan or Stockholms domkyrka (Stockholm Cathedral) was built in the 13th century in Stockholm's Old Town (Gamla Stan), making it the oldest church in the city. Although it has retained medieval architectural features such as a vaulted ceiling supported by brick pillars (like its Hanseatic League contemporaries), the exterior was transformed in the 18th century: the façade was given a Baroque design and a new tower spire was commissioned. Highlights include the main altarpiece made of ebony and silver, a large equestrian statue depicting the legend of Saint George and the Dragon, large paintings, and several graves and funerary monuments.
Access & Transport
The church is located across the road from the southwest corner of the Royal Palace in Gamla Stan, in the centre of the city. The Slottsbacken and Riddarhustorget bus stops are both 300m away and it is a 15mins walk to the main train station.
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining this activity with a visit of the Royal Palace and/or Armoury and an exploration of the neighbourhood.
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral. The cathedral is part of city's cultural, artistic and architectural heritages
Conclusion
Storkyran possesses an atypical façade that belies a medieval interior with plenty of interesting, and impressive, decorative pieces. Given its proximity to other sights, it is not hard to recommend to amateurs of religious arts but for others it may not warrant the admission fee.
