BOOK ACTIVITY

Taipei 101 Observatory

7 Section 5, Xinyi Road, 西村里, Taipei City

Description

Taipei 101 is a 508m-high skyscraper that was the world's tallest building between 2004 and 2009, it is named after its floor count (excl. 5 basement levels). The blue-green glass façade has 8 large segments reminiscent of an inverted pagoda and the tower is designed to withstand the typhoon winds and earthquake tremors that Taiwan sometimes experiences. The main observatory is located on the 89th floor, 382m above ground level, and can be reached in 37s by a high-speed elevator. There is also a smaller observatory on the very top floor (different fee applies). Trivia: 101 symbolizes the renewal of time, January 01 and a new century (100+1).

Access & Transport

The building is located in Taipei's Xinyi district. It is served by the Xinyi line 4 (Taipei Station) and the City Hall station (Bannan line) is a 10 mins walk away. There is a car park at the basement of the shopping mall. Directions info: https://www.taipei-101.com.tw/en/access

Instructions & Recommendations

Management reserves the right to close and reschedule the visit in case of adverse weather conditions. We suggest combining this activity with a visit of the nearby Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall.

Meta review

This is one of the better-ranked experiences on online review portals and a mainstay of Taipei bucket lists. The highlight is of course the panoramic views, handy for those special photo shots, for spotting tourist attractions and understanding the city's layout a bit better. Some positive feedback about the night "scenery" even though it does quickly look the same everywhere. A large number of visitors also find the explanation around the large seismic damper genuinely interesting and enjoy the ability to see it directly. The main recurring negative comments relate to the potential waiting time to go up and down, and the reflective glass that impacts the quality of pictures.

Environmental & Social

Construction would have been resources intensive (glass, steel) but the primary use is commercial, not tourism and the building has a LEED Platinum certification (double paned windows, water recycling). Socially neutral

Conclusion

A technically interesting and impressive looking building but, as usual, going to the top might be a little underwhelming and we would only truly recommend for those who have not had this type of experience yet. Otherwise it is enjoyable but certainly not unmissable or even a priority, in our book.
