Description
Hama-rikyū Gardens is located at the edge of Tokyo Bay, historically the site of a villa belonging to the ruling Tokugawa family, it was opened to the public in 1946. Its key distinctive features are the Tidal Pond (with sea water) and the teahouse connected by two bridges in the middle of it. The garden is planted with plum and cherry trees that blossom in the spring as well as old pine trees.
Access & Transport
There are two entrance gates (north and north west) and it is also possible to come in via the water bus which takes 35mins from Asakusa. The Shidome (e), Shimbashi (A, G) and Tsukijishijo (E) are all within a few mins' walk from the garden entrances. It is possible to walk to the Imperial Palace / Marunouchi area (2km) from there.
Instructions & Recommendations
This is a good place for plum blossom which takes place around late Feb/early March. Logistically, it is best combined with the area around the old fish market (Tsukiji Outer Market) and the Ginza neighbourhood.
Environmental & Social
Green attraction. Helps improve the living environment for residents.
Conclusion
The Hama Rikyu Gardens are a relaxing oasis in that part of the city and provide a metaphorical contrast between traditional and modern Japan that still co-exist. The #2 park in Tokyo, in our opinion, and definitely worth a visit.
