Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden

, Shinjuku City, Tokyo

Description

Shinjuku Gyo-en is a park and garden in the Shinjuku area of Tokyo. The eastern section blends some English Landscape and French Formal elements whereas the western part is designed in a traditional Japanese style with ponds and a pavilion. Inside, there are over 1,500 cherry trees, which make the garden a popular spot during the blossom season. There is also a greenhouse with tropical and subtropical plant species on permanent display.

Access & Transport

The park is immediately to the southeast of Shinjuku train station and to the northwest of the Japan National Stadium. The closest public transport options are the massive Shinjuku train station, Shinjuku-sanchome (F, M, Shinjuku line) and Shinjuku-gyoemmae (M) to enter from the Shinjuku Gate whereas the Kokuritsu-kyogijo station (E) is a good option to enter via the Sendagaya Gate. There is a car park on site

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest visiting here between an exploration of Shinjuku and a stop by the Meiji Shrine.

Meta review

The garden is invariably featured in travel guides and blogs and also ranked as one of the best activities in Tokyo on online portals. Visitors describe it as clean, beautiful, and large enough that one doesn't sense the city anymore once inside - the perfect break and a good option for a picnic on the grass during the warmer days. Many reviewers mention that the greenhouse is also worth a look.

Environmental & Social

A green activity and an upgrade to the residents living environment, albeit for a small fee.

Conclusion

Shinjuku Gyo-en is an excellent option for those looking to take a break from the busy Shinjuku & Shibuya district, and for visitors who enjoy traditional Japanese Gardens, of course. Pricing is reasonable and ensures both a proper upkeep and that it doesn't get too crowded, except during the quite short and spectacular cherry blossom season.
