Description
Shinjuku is one of Tokyo's major commercial and administrative centres. The western part is home to the highest concentration of skyscrapers in the city, including the mighty Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building and the eastern side houses several large department stores, a red-light district (Kabukichō), and Golden Gai with its small bars and clubs. Trivia: Shinjuku Station is considered to be the world's busiest railway station with about 3.6m users per day (2018).
Access & Transport
The district is in the western part of Tokyo, immediately north of Shibuya. It is centred around Shinjuku station (many train lines and metro M, S, E). The northern part is served by Shinjuku-Nishiguchi Station (E), the eastern by Shinjuku-sanchome (F, M) and the western by Tochomae Station (E). It is also possible to walk from Shibuya.
Instructions & Recommendations
If you need some greenery for a break, head to Yoyogi Park or Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden. We recommend street photographers to head to Shinjuku in the evenings, for the street life and lighting.
Environmental & Social
Urban and commercial environment with intense electricity consumption + heavy focus on commercial activities driven by chains and advertising.
Conclusion
Heaven for urban explorers, foodies and those with shopping on their agenda. In addition, it is easy to reach and within striking distance of other interesting sights and neighbourhoods such as Yoyogi park, Harajuku, the Meiji Shrine or the Shinjuku Gyo-en (gardens). Those who don't like concrete and bustle should avoid.
Key positive
Good insights into Japan urbanism excesses
Plenty of F&B opportunities
Key negative
Really crowded
Suitability
No restrictions but children won't find much of interest there
