BOOK ACTIVITY

Tokyo DisneySea (1 day)

, Urayasu, Chiba

Description

Tokyo DisneySea is a theme park located east of Tokyo, within the Disney Resort complex which also comprises Tokyo Disneyland. As the name suggests, the sea is an integral part of the theming with zones named as Mediterranean Harbor, Mysterious Island or Mermaid Lagoon. Some of the most popular rides include Journey to the Center of the Earth, Temple of the Crystal Skull (Indian Jones), Tower of Terror, and Raging Spirits. Of course, no Disney park would be complete without shows and a Parade.

Access & Transport

The resort complex is located in Urayasu (Chiba Prefecture), about 15km east of the centre of Tokyo. By public transport, it is served by Maihama station on the Keyo line that goes through Tokyo station (M, C, I) and Hatchōbori (H) In addition, the Disney Resort Line provides transportation between Maihama Station and major destinations within the Resort. Note that DisneySea is behind the sister park of Disneyland when coming from the metro station. Directions info: https://www.tokyodisneyresort.jp/en/tds/access.html

Instructions & Recommendations

Tickets are available for purchase 2 months in advance and some dates can get fully booked so we strongly suggest interested visitors to book well ahead of time

Meta review

Like is sister park next door, Tokyo DisneySea is one of the busiest theme parks in the world and that shows in the consistent complaints about long queuing times in the online reviews. Saturdays in particular look to be really overcrowded. On that basis, the most important tip is to arrive early and head straight to some of the most popular rides before lines build up. Some recurring negative comments about the monorail being a rip-off as well. On the positive side, both adults and children seem to enjoy the variety of rides.

Environmental & Social

The operator (OLC) is a model of transparency with plenty of data points and a wide range of targets across environmental and social aspects. Info available here: http://www.olc.co.jp/en/sustainability.html This remains an energy intensive and wasteful operation but there are serious efforts to make it less so and it provides a large number of jobs in the region.

Conclusion

Tokyo DisneySea has some thrilling rides and spectacular shows, but the experience is likely to be negatively impacted by the long waiting time (possibly for food as well) which makes the value of a day there debatable, especially as tickets aren't exactly cheap. If you have not explored Tokyo and its region, we think there are more interesting things to see and do.

Key positive

Several adrenaline-inducing rides

Some good shows

Key negative

Long waiting lines

Expensive day out

Suitability

All ages welcome but best for families - age and height restrictions apply. Visitors with disabilities will not be able to enjoy all rides.
