Tokyo National Museum

, Taito City, Tokyo

Description

The Tokyo National Museum is the largest art museum in Japan, its collections focus on ancient and medieval Japanese art, and Asian art along the Silk Road. The Japanese Gallery is in the Honkan building designed in Imperial Crown style (Neoclassical base with Japanese inspired roof) and displays a wide range of exhibits such as the Art of Tea Ceremony, Noh and Kabuki, Lacquerware, and Japanese Sculptures. The Toyokan building displays the collections of Chinese, Korean, Indian, and Southeast and Central Asian art, and the Kuroda Memorial Hall holds a collection of paintings and drawings from the artist Kuroda Seiki. Special exhibitions are housed in other buildings.

Access & Transport

The museum is located in the northeast corner of Ueno Park, next to several other museums. It is a short walk to Ueno Station with its multiple train lines and 2 metro lines (G, H), or to Uguisudani train station (Yamanote and Keihin-Tohoku lines) Accessibility info: https://www.tnm.jp/modules/r_free_page/index.php?id=128

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this attraction with a walk in Ueno Park and, for families, the Ueno Zoo might be a good option as well.

Meta review

The museum complex is generally rated as one of the best in the country and certainly Tokyo with online reviewers highlighting that the buildings themselves, as well as the garden, are worth seeing and add an extra dimension to the experience. As for the art inside, the leitmotiv is that the choice is huge with many high-quality artefacts and artworks. Some comments that there is a good level of translation into English.

Environmental & Social

We could find no information around environmental sustainability. Moderate electricity consumption. Positive from a social perspective by helping spread culture and the arts.

Conclusion

The Tokyo National Museum is a standout cultural attraction, a must see for art lovers or history buffs, and recommended for others. The buildings and garden also worth a look and there are several other attractions in the neighbourhood.
