Ueno Zoo

, Taito City, Tokyo

Description

Ueno Zoo is located in the namesake park in the centre of Tokyo. It is Japan's oldest zoo and began as a menagerie attached to the National Museum of Natural History. It is home to over 2,500 animals from more than 500 species such as Asian elephants, Japanese black bears, Giant pandas, Caribbean flamingos, and gorillas.

Access & Transport

The zoo is located at the northwest corner of Ueno Park. It is a short walk to the gigantic Ueno Station that has multiple train lines and 2 metro lines (G, H). The Nezu (C) metro station is also a short walk away, on the western side.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this attraction with a walk in Ueno park and a visit of one of the museums.

Meta review

This zoo is quite popular within the country thanks to its giant pandas but many online reviewers comment that not only one needs to queue to see them but often they are simply lying on the floor, not doing much. Otherwise, it is described as having a good variety of animals, an average size by international standards, and enclosures of mostly adequate size (but not always). The sun bears and gorillas are frequently mentioned as being among the highlights.

Environmental & Social

A non-profit managed by the municipal government. Some conservation efforts (giant pandas and Madagascar fauna and flora) that partially mitigate the ethical issue of keeping animals in captivity

Conclusion

One of the best family activities in town and excellent value given the low admission price. Fans of large zoos may be underwhelmed though, so best to couple this attraction with others in Ueno Park to get the most out of your day
