El Toboso & Museo Cervantino

1 Plaza Juan Carlos I, El Toboso, Castilla-La Mancha

Description

El Toboso is a town in Toledo Province in Castile-La Mancha. It is was featured as the residence of Don Quixote's fictional character Dulcinea del Toboso. The Cervantine Museum (Museo Cervantino) contains over 750 copies of the novel across several editions in more than 70 languages signed by personalities as well as some audio-visual projections about Don Quixote. Other highlights of the town include the main square, the Museum of Dulcinea, and the church of San Antonio Abad.

Access & Transport

The town of El Toboso is best reached by car; it is about 130km southeast of Toledo on the CM-42 / CR-1101 (or N-400 / AP-36), 140km northeast of Ciudad Real on the A-43 / CM-420 / CM-310 and 125km northwest of Albacete (A-31 / AP-36).

Instructions & Recommendations

The opening hours section roughly reflects those of the Cervantine Museum (note the closure day and the long lunch break) but the town can be visited on any day. We would encourage those who have not read Don Quixote to read through a synopsis and understand "who" the Dulcinea was to better appreciate a visit there.

Meta review

Online reviews for the Museo Cervantino are quite positive, most visitors find it interesting although many expected more than just copies of the book. The Church of San Antonio Abad is also recommended but not considered a must see. As for the Museum of Dulcinea, visitors enjoy the free entrance and taking a look around the traditional manchega house although there are recurring comments about the person in charge being quite rude.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral. Helps preserve the region's cultural heritage and tourism brings some economic influx to the town

Conclusion

The Museo Cervantino and the town's main square are quite enjoyable but El Toboso is in the middle of the La Mancha plains and some way out from other tourist sights so we would only recommend the drive there to the fans of Don Quixote novel or as part of a Toledo province road trip taking in Tembleque and some of the windmills (such as those of Consuegra).

Key positive

The Cervantine Museum helps grasp the international notoriety of Don Quixote
