Ocaña, Plaza Mayor - by Manuel Rodriguez on Google
Description
Ocaña is a town on the northern edge of Toledo Province, near Aranjuez. It is surrounded by walls in ruins and is best known for its Plaza Mayor, the Rolla de Justicia (a stone column topped with an iron cross), its several churches and convents. The Plaza Mayor de Ocaña was built in the late 18h century in the Baroque style with a rough square shape (55mx52m), there are 70 pillars in total forming an equivalent number or arches.
Access & Transport
The Regional train lines service the town directly from Madrid's Atocha station (1h journey). By car, drive along the A-4 for 65km until exit 61.
Instructions & Recommendations
This activity is well combined with a visit of the town of Aranjuez, including the Royal Palace, and/or the village of Tembleque.
Environmental & Social
The main activities in the city have a low carbon footprint. Tourism is a welcome injection of activity and revenues in the local economy
Conclusion
The highlight of the town is its spacious and harmonious main square and whilst those who enjoy religious monuments will find plenty of secondary buildings (churches and convents) to keep them busy for an extra couple of hours, those who don't may quickly get bored. On that basis, we would only recommend a trip to Ocaña either from nearby Aranjuez or as a loop / itinerary that also include other sights in the area such as Tembleque or Chinchón (both also famous for their main square)
Key positive
Beautiful Plaza Mayor
Key negative
A little time consuming to get there (unless coming from Aranjuez)
