Synagogue of Santa María la Blanca, Toledo

4 Calle de los Reyes Católicos, Toledo, Castilla-La Mancha

Description

The Synagogue of Santa María la Blanca, originally called Ibn Shushan Synagogue, was built with an Almohad architectural influence at the end of the 12th century and is one of the oldest such buildings in Europe. It is located in Toledo's old Jewish Quarter and is now operated as a museum. The interior is divided into five aisles and arcades formed by 32 pillars with capitals in Mudéjar style. The focal point is the scallop-shell-topped arch where the Torah scroll was kept (the Torah ark).

Access & Transport

The Synagogue is on the western side of the centre of Toledo, in the old Jewish Quarter. The city is a quick 35' train ride from Madrid Atocha Station or 70mins car drive on the A-42 or AP-41/A-40.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this activity with a visit of the rest of the city of Toledo, including some of its most important monuments such as the Toledo Cathedral, the Alcázar de Toledo, El Greco Museum, and the Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes.

Meta review

Online reviews for this monument / museum are mixed. Many visitors find it extremely beautiful (the arches in particular), peaceful and very well-maintained but a significant percentage feel that there is little to see (essentially one large room only) and felt a little deceived although the entrance fee is quite low.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral. Preserves the region's architectural and historical heritage.

Conclusion

A visit to the Synagogue is neither time consuming nor expensive so we would recommend it as part of the wider visit of Toledo. However, the footprint is so small that even though the arches and pillars are visually really enjoyable, we would not advise a significant detour just for this monument.

Key positive

Nice example of Mudejar design and Almohad architecture

Key negative

Small building

Suitability

No religious denomination restrictions. Accessible for visitors with reduced mobility
