Tembleque, Plaza Mayor - by marconra 1965 on Google
Description
Tembleque is a village in Toledo Province in Castile-La Mancha. It is best known for its picturesque 17th century square (Plaza Mayor) which still acts as the venue for bullfighting and other popular events. It is characterized by the white-washed facades, wooden arcades, and balconies of the three-story houses that surround it. Other highlights include the Casa de la Torres, an 18th century Baroque house-palace, and the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción built in the 16th century but enlarged in the 18th so that it mixes several architectural styles.
Access & Transport
The village is about 60km east of Toledo on the CM-42 / CM-410, 30km south of Ocaña and 35km north of Consuegra / Madridejos
Instructions & Recommendations
This activity can easily be done as a day-trip from Toledo, possibly taking in the windmills of Consuegra and/or the town of Ocaña. If you are flexible on timing, the Plaza Mayor is best enjoyed in the evenings in the summer or at lunch time the rest of the year.
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral. Helps preserve the region's architectural heritage and tourism brings some economic influx to the village
Conclusion
Tembleque draws are its original Plaza Mayor and a handful of other monuments. It may not be worth a multi-hour trip but it certainly is a good option to include in a northern La Mancha / Toledo province itinerary
