Description
Casa Loma is a castle-style mansion repurposed as a historic house museum in midtown Toronto. It was designed by E.J. Lennox in Gothic Revival style in the 1910s as a residence for financier Sir Henry Pellatt. There are nearly 100 rooms, a garden, and stables that now house a car collection. Highlights include the wood-panelled Oak Room, the Conservatory with its stained-glass dome, and a large personal library.
Access & Transport
The attraction is 2km northwest of the Royal Ontario Museum and 4km from downtown Toronto. There is paid parking onsite (C$15 per vehicle). The Dupont metro station (1) is close by (600m) and Spadina station (metro 1, 2 and trams) is a 20mins walk away (1.5km). Directions: https://casaloma.ca/plan-your-visit-directions/ The garden terrace and most rooms are accessible, but not the Queen’s Own Rifles Room, the Pellatt Room and the Servant's Room. Instructions & Recommendations
There are several F&B venues onsite (café, steakhouse and al fresco in the gardens in the summer)
Environmental & Social
No environmental data available online, we deem this neutral (some electricity Vs green spaces). The house museum is now part of the city's architectural heritage
Conclusion
An unexpected architectural complex in Ontario that makes up for the absence of historical relevance with some genuinely fancy interior deco but the pricing is a deal breaker in our opinion: it screams of commercial exploitation and doesn't represent good value at all, unless this is the closest to a medieval castle one will ever go.
Key positive
Some impressive rooms and attractive architecture
Enjoyable gardens with good views
Key negative
Lacks historical background
Considerably overpriced
Suitability
Mostly but not fully accessible for wheelchair users
