Volkach town, Bavaria

Hauptstraße, Volkach, Bayern

Description

Volkach is a small town of Lower Fanconia, in Northern Bavaria. It lies on the Main river and is considered one of the region's rural treasures. It hosts an annual regional wine festival every year in August since 1948. Highlights include the Townhall, the Market Square, the Upper Gate ("Diebenturm'), St. Bartholomew Church built in the 15th century, and the late-Gothic pilgrimage church Maria im Weingarten located just outside of town.

Access & Transport

Volkach is 30km northeast of Würzburg (B19), 95km northwest of Nuremberg (A3/B22) and 150km east of Frankfurt (A3)

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this activity with a visit of Marienberg Fortress (30km away)

Meta review

The town regularly features in the shortlist of Bavaria's prettiest towns and villages and the Maria im Weingarten pilgrimage church is the best-known attraction. Online reviews mention the hanging Madonna by Tillman Riemenschneider as being the church's highlight.

Environmental & Social

The only carbon footprint is that of your car if you drive there. Any amount spent there (F&B, accommodation, wine purchase) helps the local rural economy.

Conclusion

Volkach is a small countryside town with an authentic feel and some well-preserved architecture. No stand out feature, but if you are in a slow-travel mindset you will enjoy the place.
