Castle of Cullera - by Angel Martin on Google
Description
The Castle of Cullera was built on a hill overlooking the namesake town in the south of Valencia Province. It was built in the 10th century by the Moors and reconstructed in the 12/13th centuries. There are 2 wall enclosures with five towers, a Gothic Chapel that houses the local Municipal Museum of History and Archaeology, a Hall of Arms and 2 additional towers that are part of the main structure.
Access & Transport
Cullera is located 45km south of Valencia. The Line to Gandia stops there (35mins from Valencia). The castle is 2.5km from the train station and 1km from the town centre. There is onsite parking.
Instructions & Recommendations
Cullera has a nice beach: Playa de San Antonio.
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral except for some electricity consumption (lighting). This activity helps preserve the region's architectural and cultural heritage and brings some economic influx to the town.
Conclusion
The Castle of Cullera is quite photogenic and makes for a good cultural alternative to the beach but it does not have the scale or striking design of some of the other defensive structures in the area. Best visited as an add-on for travellers already in the area.
