Castle of Xàtiva

Subida al Castillo, Xàtiva, Comunidad Valenciana

Description

Xativa Castle is located high above town, in Valencia Province, on the ancient Via Augusta leading all the way to Cartagena and Andalucia. it consists of twin fortifications: minor (from the Iberian period) and main/major (from the Roman period). After the conquest of James I of Aragon in 1244, and the creation of the Kingdom of Valencia, the castle also became a state prison of the Crown of Aragon. The neo-Gothic complex that occupies the central part of the castle was built in the 20th century.

Access & Transport

The town is 65km from Valencia on the A-7 or 1h by train. Parking is at El Españoleto Specialty Center - from there walk or take a shuttle bus (1 € / trip) It is 2.5km to the train station (with uphill zigzags).

Instructions & Recommendations

Due to the high demand and the limitation of the number of visitors per day, it is recommended to purchase your tickets online in advance, since only 10% of the tickets will go on sale at the box office. Childrens must have a ticket (even though it is free) Tickets include a visit to the castle and the municipal museums located in the old town.

Meta review

One of the most popular sights in the Province of Valencia. Online reviewers mention the excellent views over Játiva and good information boards to learn more about the history but also note that there is no furniture left in the rooms so it feels very much like well-renovated ruins. Tips: come early morning when the weather is cool and the site not crowded, and there is a small car park near the castle (can get full quickly).

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral. Helps preserve the region's architectural and historical heritage and inject economic activity locally

Conclusion

Xàtiva Castle is a worthy stop on the way between Valencia and Alicante but may not be worth a dedicated drive except for history buffs or castle fans. We think the attraction would gain a lot by having furniture and the museum in situ.
