Description
The co-cathedral of Santa María in Castellón de la Plana (Community of Valencia) was built in neo-Gothic style on the site of the 12th century church burned down during Spain's Civil War, in 1936 (the portals were preserved). Next to it is El Fadrí, a 15th century 58m bell tower and symbol of the city.
Access & Transport
The church is located on the Plaza Mayor, next to the Town Hall. The train station is 1.5km away and it is a 45mins ride from there to Valencia on the AVE. By car, it is 75km on the AP-7.
Instructions & Recommendations
This is a place of worship so visitors should behave appropriately and dress conservatively. Also note the long afternoon break in the opening hours.
Environmental & Social
The ongoing environmental footprint is low. Helps maintain the town's cultural and architectural heritage
Conclusion
The Co-cathedral of Santa Maria is assuredly the main architectural draw of Castellon, alongside El Fardi, its twin bell tower. Whilst the interior may not be of much interest for everybody, its history as a recent construction is the opportunity to be reminded of the scars that the Civil War left in the country.
Key positive
Impressive facade and portals
The combo with the bell tower is very photogenic
Key negative
The interior feels very new
Suitability
No religious denomination restrictions
