Sagunto Castle

Carrer del Castell, Sagunt, Comunidad Valenciana

Description

Sagunto Castle occupies a hilltop overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and the town of Sagunto, in the north of the Valencia Province. The site was settled by the Iberians and its sacking by Hannibal in 219BC led to the outbreak of the Second Punic War (between Rome and Carthage - in modern day Tunisia). The fortress is surrounded by defensive walls and divided into seven main sections or plazas.

Access & Transport

The castle is a 10-15 mins walk from the centre of town and 20mins from the train station from where it is a 45mins train ride from/to Valencia. By car, Sagunto is 30km north of Valencia on the V-21/V-23.

Instructions & Recommendations

Lower down the hill is a renovated Roman Theatre - access is also free.

Meta review

Very consistent online reviews: great panoramic views from the castle (if you make abstraction of the industrial zone and the expressway) but the restoration is only partial so don't expect to see much more than ruins. Recommended when in the area. Some side comments regarding the renovation of the Roman Theatre being tasteless.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral. Helps preserve the region's architectural and historical heritage

Conclusion

On paper, this could be a standout attraction given its historical significance and large footprint - but ruins they are. A significant investment would be welcome to help create some atmosphere and have more historical info provided onsite.
