Bioparc València

3 Avinguda Pío Baroja, València, Comunidad Valenciana

Description

Bioparc València is a 10ha zoo located at the northwest end of the Turia Garden in Valencia. It houses over 800 animals from more than 100 species with a focus on African fauna and the use of natural enclosures rather than cages. The park is divided into four biomes: dry savannah, humid savannah, forests of equatorial Africa and Madagascar as well as estuaries and wetlands around the Elephant lake. There are also some educational exhibits, feeding sessions and animal 'encounters'.

Access & Transport

Bus 98 and 99 stop next to the zoo and metro station 'Nou d'Octubre' (3, 5, 9 + buses 73 and 95) is a 10 mins walk away. Parking is available and is capped at 7€ for 10h. Meta review

With the exception of reviewers criticizing the concept of zoo and keeping animals in activity, most of the online comments are quite positive and highlight the ease of viewing the animal from 'look out' points thanks to the use of natural enclosures, and even the ability to walk through some of the species. The main drawback is the summer heat of Valencia which means you should start the day early if you want to see some active animals.

Environmental & Social

Some minor conservation and education efforts over the years - not enough to compensate for the ethical issue of captivity. At least the African fauna is mostly suited to the Valencian climate. https://www.bioparcvalencia.es/fundacion/

Conclusion

The zoo is remarkable for how well the animals can be seen but lacks the size and sheer variety of species that would make it a major tourist attraction for international visitors. It is thus a good option for families residing in the area of Valencia. We would also need the zoo to be much more invested in conservation efforts before we can genuinely recommend the attraction considering the ethical issue of keeping animals in captivity.
