Catedral de València

Plaça de l'Almoina, València, Comunidad Valenciana

Description

Valencia Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church consecrated in the 13th century. It was built, after the Reconquista, over the site of the former Visigothic cathedral, which under the Moors had been turned into a mosque. The design mixes Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical elements. Artistic and architectural highlights include the eight-sided dome, the ambulatory with eight radiating chapels, the concave main entrance called the 'Iron gate', and the 15th-century paintings.

Access & Transport

The cathedral is located in the old city, 10mins walk from the 'Colón' metro station (0, 3, 5, 7, 9). The closest bus stops are 'Plaça de la Reina' (C1) and 'Comte de Trénor' along C. del Pintor Lopez (6, 11, 16, 26, 94, C2).

Instructions & Recommendations

Admission to the Miguelete Bell Tower is 2.5€/1.5€

Meta review

Overall good online reviews for what is considered the most impressive church in the area. The renovations of a few years back have paid off as visitors often mention that it looks well preserved. A few comments that price is a little high.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral. The entrance fees help preserve this historic building, part of the city's cultural and architectural heritages

Conclusion

A landmark of the city centre with a nice mix of impressive architectural and decorative features. Considering the price, we think it is best reserved for religious art and architecture buffs.

Key positive

Several interesting architectural features

A few works of art inside

Key negative

Expensive for a religious monument

Suitability

Suitable for all ages and no religious denomination restriction Accessible to visitors with reduced mobility, except for the tower (spiral staircase)
