Church of San Nicolás, Valencia

35 Carrer dels Cavallers, València, Comunidad Valenciana

Description

The Church of San Nicolás in Valencia (San Nicolás de Bari and San Pedro Mártir) is a 15th century Roman Catholic church locally nicknamed the "Valencian Sistine Chapel". It blends a Gothic structure with a spectacular 17th century Baroque decoration, in particular frescoes depicting the lives of San Nicola and Peter of Verona, along with virtues and allegories, designed by Antonio Palomino and completed by Dionis Vidal. It is also notable for its gilded altarpieces, stucco, reliefs and several paintings.

Access & Transport

Access is from No 35 calle Caballeros. The closest bus stops are Plaza de la Reina (C1) and Torres de Serranos (6-11-16-26-28-80-94-95-N10). The 'Pont de Fusta' (4) metro station is a 10 mins walk to the north

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this activity with a discovery of the Carmen neighbourhood and/or the Lonja de la Seda.

Meta review

A regular on the Valencia short-list and one of the best rated attractions in the city on online review platforms. The frescoes are the obvious draw and described as 'incredible' or 'stunning' with the advantage (Vs the Sistine Chapel) that one has plenty of time to enjoy it. Many visitors comment that the entrance fee is a little expensive but that it is worth it and definitely one of the city's highlights - comparatively better than the Cathedral according to many. Several mentions of the entrance being a little hidden and of the staff being polite and welcoming.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral. Preserves the city's architectural and artistic heritages.

Conclusion

Easily one of Valencia's standout attractions, and not just for architecture or religious art buffs. The frescoes and altarpieces are a real visual treat. Highly recommended
