Description
The Plaza de la Virgen is a pedestrian square in the old part of Valencia (Ciutat Vella). It is surrounded by the Cathedral of Santa María, the Basilica of the Virgen de los Desamparados and the Palace of the Generalitat. Its origin can be traced back to Roman times when it acted as the town's forum. The central fountain called 'Tribunal de las Aguas' is an allegorical representation, in bronze, of the Turia River surrounded by eight female figures representing the eight main ditches that irrigate the Vega de Valencia.
Access & Transport
The square is located in the old city, 10mins walk from the 'Colón' metro station (0, 3, 5, 7, 9). The closest bus stops are 'Plaça de la Reina' (C1) and 'Comte de Trénor' along C. del Pintor Lopez (6, 11, 16, 26, 94, C2).
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining a visit there with the Cathedral and the Almoina Archaeological Museum.
Environmental & Social
The neighbourhood is mostly concrete with few green spaces. Part of the city's architectural heritage.
Conclusion
The square itself isn't really spectacular but the buildings around are and it is within walking distance from several tourist attractions so it is definitely worth including in one's itinerary.
