Catedral de Valladolid

1 Calle Arribas, Valladolid, Castilla y León

Description

Valladolid Cathedral (full name Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción) was designed in the mid-17th century by Juan de Herrera in Herrerian style - it was planned to be the largest church in Europe at the time but funding ran short after the court moved towards Madrid (the city was then the de-facto capital of the kingdom) and issues with the terrain underlying the foundations. The main architectural highlight is the south façade; inside there is an altarpiece by Juan de Juni and a Diocesan museum.

Access & Transport

The cathedral is in the centre of the historical district of Valladolid, 400m east of the Plaza Mayor. Buss 1, 2, 24 stop at 'Plaza de la Libertad' nearby and the train station is 20mins walk (1.5km) to the south. The city is only 65mins by train from Madrid, or 200km by road.

Instructions & Recommendations

It isn't clear whether the 3 € entrance fee is for the cathedral or for the museum only.

Meta review

Online reviews for the monument are average to say the least, many visitors make the comparison to other churches such as the Cathedral of Burgos and Leon, both in Castile y Leon, that are much more impressive. The problems clearly are the unfinished look with a mix of architectural styles that do not gel, and the spartan interior. The exceptions to that are the museum and the main altarpiece that draw excellent feedback from specialists.

Environmental & Social

We deem this attraction environmentally neutral. Part of the city's architectural heritage

Conclusion

The cathedral has a very unusual exterior look but the façade is truly spectacular and worth the detour. However, the interior and the museum will be best enjoyed by religious art connoisseurs.

Key positive

Striking south façade

Interesting museum and beautiful main altarpiece

Key negative

Looks architecturally unfinished

Very sobre interior

Suitability

No restrictions but the church is a place of worship so you should dress conservatively. The tower is not accessible for visitors with reduced mobility
