Plaza Mayor de Valladolid - by an ma on Google
Description
The Plaza Mayor was the marketplace during the medieval period of Valladolid, it underwent significant redevelopment after a fire in the 1560's; the Town Hall, the most distinctive building around the square, dates from that time. The project was led by royal architect Francisco de Salamanca using a Spanish Baroque design. The square forms a massive rectangle with a 3:2 ratio at the centre of which stands the statue of the founder of the city, Pedro Ansúrez.
Access & Transport
Unsurprisingly, the plaza stands in the centre of the historical district of Valladolid, walking distance to most other tourist sights and 500m east from the Puente del Poniente that spans the Pisuerga River. Several bus services stop nearby at Plaza Poniente and the train station is 15mins walk (1.2km) to the south. The city is only 65mins by train from Madrid, or 200km by road.
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining this attraction with an exploration of the historical centre and a visit of the Cathedral, only 400m from the Plaza Mayor.
Environmental & Social
Environmentally, there is no data at the neighbourhood level, but it is mostly concrete with few green spaces. Part of the city's architectural heritage.
Conclusion
Valladolid's Plaza Mayor may not compete with the very best in the country but it isn't far behind thanks to its uniform architecture - sobre and elegant at the same time. In the evening, it also comes to life so that it then combines looks and atmosphere. Worth seeing by day and by night.
