National Museum of Sculpture, Valladolid - by Javi Laiz on Google
Description
The National Museum of Sculpture of Valladolid displays a collection of mostly religious sculptures (from regional churches and monasteries) from the Middle Ages all the way through to the 19th century. Those are housed in three buildings: Colegio de San Gregorio (historical), Palacio de Villena (Neapolitan nativity scene and temporary exhibitions), and Casa del Sol (artistic reproductions). The Colegio de San Gregorio is one of the best examples of architecture from the period of the Catholic Monarchs, in particular its finely carved façade and courtyard.
Access & Transport
The museum is at the northern end of the historical centre of Valladolid, a 10mins walk from the Plaza Mayor. There is a bus stop serviced by several lines nearby on Calle Gondoma. The city is only 65mins by train from Madrid, or 200km by road.
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining this museum with the Iglesia de San Pablo next to it.
Environmental & Social
Minor environmental impact to run the museum (mostly electricity) and repurposing of existing buildings. Preserves the region's architectural and artistic heritages.
Conclusion
A real gem for amateurs of religious arts and worth a detour for anybody with general cultural interests. Easily one of the cultural highlights of Valladolid.
