Fréjus Cathedral & Cloister

Rue de Fleury, Fréjus, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

Description

The Fréjus Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-Léonce de Fréjus) is part of a complex of religious buildings built between the 5th and 13th centuries that include, inter alia, a baptistry with Merovingian architecture and a 13th century cloister built with stones from the Esterel massif and white marble from Carrare. It is decorated with a carved and painted wood ceiling and double Corinthian columns. The cathedral contains two separate churches: the local parish church and the one belonging to the bishop, which were eventually merged and are now only separated by arches.

Access & Transport

Address: 48, rue du Cardinal Fleury, 83600 Fréjus The monument is in the centre of town, 200m from the train station which is on the Marseille to Nice line. By car, it is 65km westward from Nice and 40km from Cannes on the A8/D37. In the other direction, it is 140km from Marseille on the A8 (exit 37).

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this activity with a visit of the historical centre of Fréjus.

Meta review

For most reviewers, the attraction is the cloister rather than the cathedral - although the baptistry is also worth checking out, being one of the oldest in the country. The bestiary painted on the wooden ceiling is both original and intriguing and complemented by a short educational movie but there are recurring comments questioning whether this is worth the entrance fee and advising to take a city pass instead giving access to the main cultural sites at a price only marginally higher.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral. Tourism helps preserve the city's historical and architectural heritage.

Conclusion

The Cathedral and Cloister complex of Fréjus have an interesting (and old) history but, with a couple of exceptions, lack any stand-out attribute. The center of town is quite similar in that sense but overall warrants a few hours stop for tourists travelling through or based in the area.

Key positive

Originality of the merged churches and the ceiling bestiary

Key negative

No impressive architectural feature

Suitability

No religious denomination restrictions and accessible for visitors with reduced mobility
