The Mary Magdalene Basilica of Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume, a town located in the Var department, is one of Provence's most important religious buildings. It was built between 1295 and 1532 in a predominantly gothic style and holds several relics of Mary Magdalene, including her skull, which were claimed to have been discovered in the crypt of Saint-Maximin in 1273. It is also known for its playing organ and its sarcophagi. Architecturally, the building is notable for its flying buttresses, its facade and its volume: 73m long, 43m wide and 29m high.
