Description
Saint-Tropez is one of the Cote d'Azur best known seaside resorts, popular with both European and American celebrities and tourists. The Romans had settled the area along the coast from Massilia (Marseille) early on, but it isn't until the end of the 10th century that it was fortified. For most of its remaining history, Saint Tropez' economy was based around fishing but in the 1920's it started attracting French artists (actors and musicians) - and it has not looked back since. The main sights include the harbour, the citadel and the various beaches in or around town.
Access & Transport
The town is 40km southwest of Fréjus, 110km from Nice (A8 / D25), 70km east of Toulon (A570/D98) and 135km from Marseille.
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining this activity with a visit of the Maritime Museum in the citadel and some time at the beach. Pampelonne Beach is only 6km away in Ramatuelle and is one of the best stretches of sand in the region.
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral. Tourism provides economic activity to the community but there is a clear case of over-commercialization, and the town is expensive for residents.
Conclusion
It is difficult for the town to live up to most visitors' expectation, knowing international stars are regular there. And indeed, unless you are very much into people watching, chances are that this is a place you'll be happy to have "ticked off" but won't be in a hurry to go back to. Which is a shame because if you can somehow avoid the over-commercialisation, there is an enjoyable seaside fishing town atmosphere, some hiking and gorgeous beaches within a few minutes' drive.
