Description
The Saint-Tropez Maritime Museum is located in the town's citadel that was built in the early 17th century. The Museum consists of three levels: the ground floor covers history, economy and legends relating to the sea, the next floor honours figures of the local maritime history and the top floor is a terrasse with views over the Gulf of Saint-Tropez and exhibits around yachting.
Access & Transport
Address: 1 Montée de la Citadelle, 83990 Saint-Tropez The Citadel is on top of the hill, 500m east of the harbour of Saint-Tropez. The town itself is 40km southwest of Fréjus, 110km from Nice (A8 / D25), 70km east of Toulon (A570/D98) and 135km from Marseille.
Instructions & Recommendations
Guided visits take place by prior reservation between 11h and 15h30. By default, those are in French language, but English can be arranged on request.
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral (min. electricity consumption). The museum helps preserve the local architectural and historical heritage, but we wish the negative aspects of the maritime trade during the period of the European colonies was weaved into the main narrative.
Conclusion
It really is 2 attractions into one: the remnants of a fortress a short hike from downtown with gorgeous views over the harbour and the Gulf of St Tropez, and an interesting - if sometimes a bit too "local" - maritime museum. Not a regional must see by any means but there is no good reason not to go if you spend more than one day in town.
