Villa Noailles, Hyères

Montée de Noailles, Hyères, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

Description

Villa Noailles is a modernist house located in the hills above Hyères (along the French Cote d'Azur) that is used as a contemporary arts center with a focus on architecture, fashion, photography, and design. Those are alternatively showcased during temporary exhibitions. The villa was designed in the 1920's by architect Mallet-Stevens for the Viscount of Noailles and his wife, important local art patrons. The design seeks to maximize luminosity and functionality with minimum decoration. The furnishing borrowed a lot of industrial elements, and the villa was expanded in the following years to reach 2 000m2 and 60 rooms with a cubist garden. It became a regular meeting place for the avant-garde artist movements with names such as Giacometti, Cocteau, Picasso and Dalí being there often.

Access & Transport

Address: 47 Montée Noailles, Hyères The villa is 2km from the train station, from there it is a 20mins ride to Toulon and 1h25 to Marseille. A transfer in Toulon is required to head towards Cannes and Nice. By car, it is a short 20km drive to Toulon (A570/A57), 85km to Marseille and 150km to Nice.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this activity with a visit of the old center of town or the seaside towns of Bormes-les-Mimosas and/or Le Lavandou

Meta review

The majority of reviewers aren't really impressed with the interior and the exhibitions, wishing more of the original furnishing had been retained. However, they do enjoy the exterior aspect, the garden and the panoramic views over Hyeres, the Giens peninsula and the island of Porquerolles.

Environmental & Social

Minor environmental impact to run the arts center (mostly electricity). Marginally positive from a social perspective as it helps spread the arts

Conclusion

The villa is an interesting side trip for anybody who is already in the Toulon to Le Lavandou area and is interested in either modern architecture or contemporary art. If that is not you, then you might not get much out of it.
