Castel Sant'Angelo

50 Lungotevere Castello, Roma, Lazio

Description

Castel Sant'Angelo is also known as the Mausoleum of Hadrian. It was commissioned for that purpose by the Emperor in the 2nd century AD but was later converted into a military fortress during which time most of the tomb contents and decorations were lost. Legend holds that the Archangel Michael appeared atop the mausoleum, sheathing his sword as a sign of the end of the plague of 590, thus lending the castle its present name. The building was converted into a castle at the beginning of the 14th century by Pope Nicholas III who connected it to St Peter's Basilica with a covered corridor called the Passetto di Borgo. Today, the castle is a museum open to the public.

Access & Transport

Address: 50 Lungotevere Castello There are several bus stops around Castel Sant'Angelo: Crescenzio/Orazio (280, 492) along Via Crescenzio and P.za Pia/Castel S. Angelo (23, 40, 62, 280, 982). It is also a short walk to Rome's Centro Storico across Ponte Sant'Angelo or Ponte Umberto I.

Instructions & Recommendations

It is necessary to book online to visit on Saturday, Sunday or public holidays. The monument is on the way to / from the Vatican and is easy to include in a walking itinerary between the Old Rome and the Holy See. The upmarket Prati neighbourhood immediately north is also worth exploring.

Meta review

The monument gets excellent reviews for its exterior look and the views from it, but many aren't convinced by the interior, especially considering the entry price. Fortunately, it is comparatively easier to get tickets here than in other Vatican venues.

Environmental & Social

We deem this activity environmentally neutral. Preserves the city's historical and architectural heritage

Conclusion

Castel Sant'Angelo is quite a famous monument nowadays and its distinctive silhouette is a must see on the way to the Vatican. As to visiting, it is entirely optional and clearly not as grand as many of Rome's other museums and churches.
