Description
Vaison-la-Romaine is a town in the Vaucluse department of South Eastern France famous for its roman ruins and medieval town. The town is divided between the Colline du Château (upper city) and the Colline de la Villasse (lower city) which are separated by the Ouvèze river that is spanned by a Roman bridge. Most of the monuments were built in the 1st century AD and are split between the La Villasse and Puymin areas. These include rich townhouses, the bridge, an antique theatre, and thermal baths. The cathedral and the Castle of the counts of Toulouse are among the other highlights.
Access & Transport
All sights in town are within walking distance of each other. Vaison-la-Romaine is about 30km to the northeast of Carpentras, 30km north of Orange, 140km north of Marseille and 210km south of Lyon. There are no public transport options.
Instructions & Recommendations
The “Pass” ticket provides access to the museum and all the town's archaeological sites for 24h. This activity can easily be combined with the Mt Ventoux, Malaucène (one of the access points) is only 10km away.
Environmental & Social
Environmentally neutral. Preserves the architectural and historical heritage of the region and brings some economic influx to the town
Conclusion
Vaison-la-Romain is quite under-rated in our opinion: the combination of a quaint medieval town, a castle, a cathedral and a roman bridge is quite hard to beat. Each monument on its own might not feel overly impressive but, as a whole, we think it is special and strongly recommend a visit there as part of a slow travel regional tour.
Key positive

Affordable entrance fee with only one ticket required
Key negative
A little out of the way from other regional sights
