Basilica Santa Maria della Salute

1 Dorsoduro, Venezia, Veneto

Description

Santa Maria della Salute is a Roman Catholic church and minor basilica in Venice. It is located at the pointy end of Dorsoduro (Punta della Dogana) and is therefore very visible from the San Marco shore. It was built in the 17th century as a votive offering dedicated to Our Lady of Health for the city's deliverance from the 1630 plague (most of the objects of art housed in the church bear references to the Black Death). It was designed in Baroque style as an octogonal building with two domes and a pair of belltowers at the back. The monument has inspired artists such as Canaletto and Turner. The interior (also octogonal) has eight radiating chapels and the main sacristy houses twelve works by Titian, a Tintoretto, and a rich series of works by lesser-known artists.

Access & Transport

Address: Fondamenta Salute, 1 Dorsoduro Vaporetto #1 stops at "Salute", next to the church and goes to San Marco or Giglio from there. There seems to be a wheelchair-accessible entrance

Instructions & Recommendations

The opening hours for the sacristy are a little narrower than for the rest of the church and it is closed on Monday and Tuesday mornings.

Meta review

Online reviews are consistent: the church is worth a visit and it is a quick trip across from San Marco. There is plenty to see, starting from the ornate façade, the pope's throne and other religious artefacts. The paintings in the optional museum (sacristy) are, according to comments, also worth the small extra fee for those keen on Renaissance religious art.

Environmental & Social

We deem this activity environmental neutral. Part of the city's architectural and artistic heritages

Conclusion

The Basilica Santa Maria della Salute is an icon of Venice skyline and deserves a visit for its original architecture, especially inside with an unusual octogonal layout. The quality of the paintings is a definite draw and the church the ideal starting point of a walk across Dorsoduro, going past the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and the Gallerie dell'Accademia.

Key positive

Scenic crossing from San Marco

Key negative

None

Suitability

No religious denomination restrictions. The monument appears to be accessible to wheelchair users but the difficulty is in getting there (vaporetto and/or small bridges)
