Description
Burano is an island at the northern end of the Venetian Lagoon known for its brightly coloured homes and lattice work. Besides the houses, the main sights include the church of San Martina with its leaning campanile (bell tower), the Lace Museum (Museo del Merletto), and the small canals that technically split Murano into 5 islands with the restaurants lining them Trivia: the colours of the house aren't random and the owner of the house needs to obtain the list of permitted colours from the government.
Access & Transport
The island is 7km from the city, about 1km from Torcello and is linked to Mazzorbo by a bridge. The main departure point is Fondamente Nove in Cannaregiom using line 12 (or N, at night). Line 9 also connects Burano to Torcello and line 12 to Murano whereas line 14 links up to Puna Sabbioni, on the West Coast of Cavallino-Treporti.
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining a visit there with either Torcello Island (#9, 12, N) or the Murano islands (#12, N to/from "Faro" stop)
Environmental & Social
Mostly low carbon footprint besides the crossing by vaporetto. A little over-commercialized
Conclusion
In our opinion, Burano is an ideal half-day getaway from Venice (or full day when combined with Torcello) for anybody with over 3 days in the city. There is a unique feel and some excellent photos of rows of colourful houses to be taken - completely different from San Marco and San Polo neighbourhoods!
Key positive
Very photogenic canal-side houses
Key negative
A bit time consuming to get there
A little too commercialized
Suitability
Wheelchair users will need assistance to cross the various small bridges
