Doge's Palace

1 Piazza San Marco, Venezia, Veneto

Description

The Doge's Palace (Palazzo Ducale) was the residence of the Doge of Venice, the effective ruler of the Republic of Venice. It is located along the Grand Canal and the Piazzetta San Marco and became a museum open to the public in the 1920s. It was built in the mid-14th century overlooking the lagoon before being expanded and partially rebuilt several times following fires. The structure includes an internal courtyard with a ceremonial staircase, the Doge's apartments, several council chambers and other rooms with an institutional purpose - the most famous of which is the Chamber of the Great Council where the longest canvas painting in the world is on display (Il Paradiso of Tintoretto) - the old prison (Piombi) and the New Prisons linked to the main palace by the famous Bridge of Sighs.

Access & Transport

The Palace is located along the Piazzetta San Marco. Vaporetto line 1 stops at San Marco, along the night line N and airport lines A and B. Many other lines (#2, 4, 5, 7, 14, 20) also stop at San Zaccaria piers, just past the Doge's Palace. The Palace is walking distance to most of the sights in San Polo, Dorsoduro and Castello neighborhoods.

Meta review

Impressive from the outside and even more so inside, that is the opinion of most online reviewers for the Dog's palace, one of Venice's highest ranked attractions. Visitors highlight the beauty of the paintings and frescoes and the special thrill of going through the senate and council chambers. The only recurring relates to the organization (waiting time) and crowded aspect of the visit.

Environmental & Social

We consider this activity environmentally neutral. Preserves the city's historical, artistic and architectural heritages

Conclusion

The Doge's Palace is unique in many respects: its location, its history at the political center of the Republic of Venice, and the exquisite Renaissance art inside its various rooms. The only drawback is the price which is fair if you also visit the others museums included in the ticket price and/or the Marciana Library but is quite steep otherwise.
