Murano Glass museum

8 Fondamenta Marco Giustinian, Venezia, Veneto

Description

The Murano Glass Museum (Museo del Vetro) documents and illustrates the history of glass making with a focus on the famous Murano glass manufactured in the namesake island just north of Venice. The items range from antiquity to 20th century works. It is housed in the Palazzo Giustinian designed in Gothic style which includes some garden area and sculptures. The Murano Glass (a.k.a. Venice Glass) is made with a soda-lime "metal" and decorated using "hot" glass-forming techniques. The island was the main European center for luxury glass from the 13th centuries until the Italian Renaissance and the dissolution of the Venetian state in the late 18th century. Murano glass makers claim to fame include the creation of cristallo (almost transparent) and lattimo (that looks like porcelain).

Meta review

Reviews are a little mixed: visitors enjoy the historical and technical insights but wish they were more in-depth / better explained, and they confirm that there are many beautiful pieces in various forms and shapes but that it is also true of the various shops that do not charge an entrance fee. The palace in which the museum is housed gets good side comments.

Environmental & Social

We deem this activity environmentally neutral. Helps preserve the palazzo and the technical history of the island

Conclusion

A little pricey but a good place to start a visit to Murano and gets your glass-making basics and history right! A little expensive so not a must do either if you are on a tight budget - just make sure to pop into a few glassware shops instead
