Museum of Naval History, Venice - by Frank Engel on Google
Description
The Museum of Naval History of Venice (Museo Storico Navale) was established by the Italian Royal Navy and houses a collection of ship models, weapons and other items related to the naval and maritime history of Venice. The museum is located in a 15th century building near the Venetian Arsenal in the Castello district and occupies five floors, some with unexpected content such as the collection of models of Chinese junks donated by a collector on the 3rd floor or a precious collection of shells on the 4th fl.
Access & Transport
Address: Riva S. Biasio, Castello 2148 - 30122 Venice It is only a 10mins walk from Piazza San Marco, past the Doge's Palace and along the waterfront. Alternatively, the vaporetto stop "Arsenale" (B, 1, 4.1, 4.2) is only 400m away.
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining a visit there with a walk around the Venetian Arsenal and the Giardini della Biennale (Biennale Gardens)
Environmental & Social
We could not find any environmental data or policy and deem this aspect neutral. The museum seeks to preserve the city's historical and technical heritage
Conclusion
One could have high expectation for this museum given the city/republic's history is intertwined with that of its naval and merchant fleets. Unfortunately, the museum is managed by the Italian Navy who is no expert in curating experience for tourist and the focus is squarely on ships and naval history, not on Venice's maritime history. Good potential, but poor execution.
