Peggy Guggenheim Collection

701-704 Dorsoduro, Venezia, Veneto

Description

The Peggy Guggenheim Collection is a modern art museum housed in the 18th century Palazzo Venieer dei Leoni, on the Grand Canal in the Dorsoduro sestiere of Venice. It belongs to the Guggenheim Foundation and is named after Peggy Guggenheim who owned the private collection until her death (1979) and lived in the palace for 30 years. It is one of the city most visited sites. The collection includes Cubist, Surrealist and Abstract Expressionist artworks from artists such as Braque, De Chirico, Dalí, Picasso, Max Ernst, Giacometti, Gorki, Kandinsky, Magritte, Mondrian and Pollock.

Access & Transport

Address: Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, Dosoduro 701, Venice The museum is located on the Grand Canal between the Accademia Bridge and the Church of Santa Maria della Salute. Vaporettos stop at those 2 landmarks: Accademia (1, N) and Salute (1)

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining a visit there with either the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute or the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore (need to take the vaporetto). If you are in the mood for more art, the Gallerie dell'Accademia is only a 5 mins walk away.

Meta review

The art museum is well-known and gets excellent reviews for the high calibre of its collection which includes works by the who is who of modern art as well as for the venue: nice building in an outstanding location. The main criticisms relate to the apparent lack of logic in the way the works are displayed and high entrance price considering the small size of the collection.

Environmental & Social

Some environment impact to run the museum (mostly electricity). Spreads culture and the arts.

Conclusion

The Peggy Guggenheim Collection is a good alternative to the more classically oriented art that prevails in the city and - on paper - the name of the artists on display is genuinely astonishing for a private collection, but there are few well-known pieces. We only wish price was a little lower and more in line with the scale of the museum.
