Description
The Rialto Bridge (Ponte di Rialto) is the most famous and oldest of the four bridges that span Venice's Grand Canal. It was built at the end of the 16th century and connects the sestieri (neighbourhoods or districts) of San Marco and San Polo where the Rialto market used to take place. The single span stone bridge was designed by Antonio da Ponte; it has a width of 23m and 2 rows of covered shops.
Access & Transport
The bridge connects Riva del Ferro on San Marco side and Riva del Vin and Ruga dei Oresi on San Polo side. Vaporettos stop at "Rialto" (A, 1, 2, N).
Instructions & Recommendations
Make sure to take the vaporetto under the bridge at least once and discover this monument on the way to either the San Marco or the San Polo side.
Environmental & Social
No carbon footprint and helps preserve the city's architectural heritage. The area is over-commercialized but that is true of most of San Marco and San Polo
Conclusion
The Rialto bridge is gorgeous and an engineering marvel of the time but it is far from being one of the city highlights in our opinion. Just make sure you cross or navigate under it at some stage but it is only worth a few minutes
