San Giorgio Maggiore church & belltower, Venice

Description

San Giorgio Maggiore is a 16th century Benedictine church located on the namesake island in Venice's lagoon, across the Grand Canal from Piazza San Marco. It was built in Renaissance style. The façade solves the design problem of giving a classical temple front to a Christian church with low side aisles and a high nave. This was achieved by essentially "superimposing two facades". The interior is bright and relatively undecorated though it does contain paintings by masters such as Tintoretto, Sebastiano Ricci and Jacopo Bassano. The campanile (bell tower) is located behind the church and can be ascended by visitors. The first instance was built in the 15th century but fell 300 years later and it was rebuilt in the 1790's in neo-classical style.

Access & Transport

Address: Isola di S.Giorgio Maggiore, 30133, Venezia The island is also called San Giorgio Maggiore and can easily be reached by Vaporetto line 2 (and N) from San Marco or Giudecca island / Dorsoduro.

Instructions & Recommendations

Note that the church is closed to visitors during Sunday mass between 10h40 and 12h00. This activity is best combined with sights around Piazza San Marco or around Dorsoduro such as the Peggy Guggenheim Collection (vaporetto stop of Zattere).

Meta review

Architecturally, visitors enjoy the façade the most and find the interior sobre and understated. The favourite aspect is the views from the top of the campanile - without the crowd and waiting time of San Marco.

Environmental & Social

We deem this activity environmental neutral. Helps preserve the city's architectural heritage

Conclusion

San Giorgio Maggiore island is a short hop from San Marco and the church is certainly worth a visit for its paintings whilst the views from the Campanile are possibly the best in the city. Highly recommended
