Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari - by Frank Engel on Google

Description
The Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari is the largest church in Venice and the burial place of many distinguished Venetians such as Titian and some of the city's Doges. It was built with bricks in the 14th century and designed in Gothic style. The Romanesque belltower is 70m high and is the second highest in the city after that of San Marco. Inside, highlights include paintings by the likes of Titan (e.g. the Pesaro Madonna and the Assumption of the Virgin), the altar pieces and pipe organs, sculptures and woodworks, and monuments / memorials such as the neo-classical marble pyramid dedicated to Canova.
Access & Transport
Address: San Polo, 3072 - 30125 Venezia The church is a 10mins walk from the train station and from both Ponte dell'Accademia and Ponte di Rialto for crossing into/from San Marco. The "San Toma'" vaporetto stop (1, M) is only 300m away
Instructions & Recommendations
Access to the Basilica is allowed only to visitors "adequately dressed" and it is forbidden to enter the church with food and drinks We suggest combining this activity with the Scuola Grande di San Rocco across the road (at the back of the church) and an exploration of the San Polo neighbourhood.
Environmental & Social
We consider this activity environmentally neutral. Helps maintain the city's architectural and artistic heritages
Conclusion
The "Frari" is one of Venice largest and most important churches. Its imposing and sobre exterior belies a large quantity of gorgeous ornaments and artwork inside. An obligatory stop when visiting the San Polo neighbourhood.
