Scuola Grande di San Rocco

3054 Campo San Polo, Venezia, Veneto

Description

The Scuola Grande di San Rocco is a building containing a large collection of Tintoretto paintings, including some of its finest works. It is the seat of the San Rocco confraternity formed in the 15th century, so named because it was next to the namesake church. The building was completed in the mid-16th century and designed with 2 large halls on the ground and first floors. In the Sala Terra (G/F), the works center on the life of the Virgen Mary and in the Sala Superiore the themes are from the Old and New Testaments. There are over 60 paintings in total, including a few by other painters such as Giuseppe Angeli, Titian and Palma il Giovane.

Access & Transport

Address: San Polo, 3054 - 30125 Venezia The building is a 10mins walk from the train station and from both Ponte dell'Accademia and Ponte di Rialto for crossing into/from San Marco. The "San Toma'" vaporetto stop (1, M) is only 300m away

Instructions & Recommendations

Under 18 must be accompanied by at least one parent. We suggest combining this activity with the Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari in front of it and an exploration of the San Polo neighbourhood.

Meta review

The building isn't widely known but draws almost only praise for the quality of the paintings, the adjective "stunning" is used by many when qualifying it. Several visitors also point out the beautiful wood carvings and note that the staff was quite friendly. The only drawback is that there are almost no information boards to describe the paintings.

Environmental & Social

We deem this activity marginally negative from an environmental standpoint (electricity consumption). The website states that entry fees are used for restoration, maintenance as to fund various charitable activities - and this sounds credible.

Conclusion

The Scuola Grande di San Rocco stands apart from the traditional art museums and is a little similar to some of the Florence and Rome palazzos with their painted walls and ceilings. It will be hard for anyone not to be impressed.
