Description
The Teatro La Fenice ("Phoenix Theatre") is an opera house in Venice. It holds a special place in the opera world because many premieres were held there, especially during the 19th century with composers such as Bellini, Rossini, Donizetti and Verdi. The current building is the third incarnation of the theatre (hence the Phoenix reference), the previous two having literally gone down in flame, the last time in 1996 (arson), so it only re-opened in 2004. The design was based on that of the 19th century using photographs as models. The audio-guide tour includes a visit of the hall, the opera room, the royal box, passageways and the internal exhibition dedicated to Maria Callas Guided tours can also be arranged in Italian, English or French
Access & Transport
Address: 1965 Campo San Fantin The theatre is roughly equidistant from the vaporetto stops of Rialto (1, 2, N), Sant'Angelo (1, N), Giglio (A, 1) and San Marco (A, B, 1, 10, N) The website states that "access with a wheelchair is possible in all sectors of La Fenice Opera House". Best to check and notify them ahead of time at: info@teatrolafenice.org
Instructions & Recommendations
The audioguide is available for free but the management recommends that visitors download the app (Android and iOS available) before the visit. Please double check the visit time before heading there on: https://festfenice.com/en/orari From the Theatre it is a 3 mins walk to the Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo and its famous spiral staircase.
Environmental & Social
We deem this activity environmentally neutral. Cultural aspect and part of the city's architectural and artistic heritage.
Conclusion
Given its central location, this self-guided audio tour is an excellent opportunity to visit a famous opera house for those who have never attended a performance. Not the same thing of course but maybe the necessary step to give it a try next time? Beyond that, there is plenty to look at and learn.
