Capuchin Crypt (Kapuzinergruft)

2 Tegetthoffstraße, Wien, Wien

Description

The Capuchin Crypt (or Imperial Crypt) is a burial chamber that serves as the main place of entombment for the members of the House of Habsburg since 1633. It is located beneath the Capuchin church, in the historical center of Vienna, and contains the cremated remains of about 150 members of the dynasty, including 30 emperors and empresses. The sarcophagi are generally made up of bronze alloy and range in style from puritan plain to rococo.

Access & Transport

Capuchin Church is located on Neuer Markt, between St Stephen's Cathedral and Burggarten / Hofburg. Bus 2A sops nearby and the Stephansplatz metro station (U1, U3) is 300m to the north with 'Oper, Karlsplatz U' tram station (1, 2, 71, D) roughly the same distance to the south

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining a visit there with the nearby Albertina Museum and/or Vienna State Opera House, both only 200m away

Meta review

The crypt generally features in travel guides but is seldom considered a major attraction. Most visitors are quite impressed, both by the considerable number of tombs and by some of the more elaborately (or is it extravagantly) decorated. For many reviewers, the visit is described as 'interesting' from an historical perspective and the highlight is the tomb of Maria Theresa of Austria.

Environmental & Social

We deem this activity environmentally neutral. Helps preserve the country's and city's architectural and historical heritages.

Conclusion

The Imperial Crypt at the Capuchin Church is mighty impressive in size and refinement but for many visitors the multitude of 'residents' having wielded power over several centuries will tend to blur the historical background. Sometimes less is more. Worth seeing nonetheless when in the historical center of Vienna.

Key positive

Some impressively decorated tombs

Key negative

Foreign travellers may lack the required historical background to fully appreciate

Suitability

Accessible to wheelchair users. We would not recommend this for younger children due to the slightly macabre aspect
