Description
Vienna City Hall (Wiener Rathaus) is the seat of the city government. It was built in the 1870s in Neo-Gothic style and, with a tower topping out at 98m, held for a few years the title of world's tallest building. Incredibly, the building contains almost 3,000 rooms. The Rathausplatz is the square in front of the City Hall and, on the opposite side, the Burgtheater. Every winter, the square holds one of the city's main Christmas markets.
Access & Transport
The square is next to the Volksgarten, on the western side of the historical center of the city. The 'Rathausplatz, Burgtheater' tram station (1, 71, D) and Rathaus (2) are next to the square and building respectively with the Schottentor underground (U2) a 5 mins' walk away.
Instructions & Recommendations
Free guided tours (in German) of the City Hall take place on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 13h00 We suggest combining this attraction with a visit of the Volksgarten and/or the Natural History Museum.
Environmental & Social
No environmental data for the area that includes a lot of asphalt and concrete but also some green spaces. Part of the city's architectural heritage.
Conclusion
The City Hall building is easily one of the most impressive sights in the centre of Vienna. Since there are many other attractions nearby, make sure to spare a few minutes to check it out.
