The Hofburg & Sisi Museum

In der Burg, Wien, Wien

Description

The Hofburg acted as the former imperial palace of the Habsburg kings and emperors of the Holy Roman Empire in Vienna since its construction in the 13th century and is now the official residence and workplace of the president of Austria. It has been greatly expanded over time to include other buildings such as the treasury, the Burgtheater or the imperial chapel. The Sisi Museum is housed in the Stephan apartments and exhibits personal items of the Empress Elisabeth of Austria whilst the Silver Collection showcases luxurious dining silverware and other decorative items.

Access & Transport

The Hofburg complex and Sisi Museum are located in the southwest of Innere Stadt, between Burggarten, Maria-Theresien-Platz and Volksgarten. Burgring tram stop (1, 2, 71, D) is on the southern side of the complex and Herrengasse metro station (U3) is 200m north of the museum.

Meta review

The Hofburg palace is widely described and considered as a must see in the city, both for its gorgeous architecture and its historical background. The main drawback is that it has been divided into several museums so that visiting everything can become quite an expensive endeavour. The Sisi Museum provides good insight into the life of the Empress but the content itself isn't riveting. As for the Silver collection, it is often described as impressive a first but quite repetitive. The main recurring complain is that photography is not allowed.

Environmental & Social

No environmental data available. The museums consume electricity (lighting, cooling, heating) but not unreasonable on a per visitor basis. Preserves the country's architectural, historical and artistic heritages

Conclusion

The Hofburg is an unmissable building for those visiting Vienna: the center of power of the Empire under the Habsburg dynasty. The Sisi Museum and Silver Collection do exude a sense of incredible wealth and luxury but only give a small insight into the life and living quarters of the palace. Enjoyable but not a priority.
